Army Was at Guadalcanal Too!

Edwin Shanahan at the Menlo Park, NJ Veteran's Home tells about the Army's 754th Tank BN at Guadalcanal which is known largely as a Navy and Marine battle with the Japanese. In his full interview - (of which parts will be posted later)- he tells us the Marines were not fully prepared with equipment such as tanks for Guadalcanal (this was very early in the war), so his Army unit - (the 754th Armored BN) shipped out with them. In battles on Gudalcanal, Edwin was present and saw the action that earned Sgt. Basilone one of his several awards for gallantry. Edwin also received a silver star for action that day. Basilone is remembered for his Medal of Honor, awarded for action at Guadalcanal. Basilone Day in Raritan, NJ commemorates his memory. He died early in the fight for Iwo Jima. In THIS clip - Mr. Shanahan relates the surprise of Adm.Halsey (or was it Nimitz?) placing a silver star on an **ARMY** soldier at Guadalcanal. Shanahan is a rare honorary member of the Marine Corps League in Raritan. This video was shot on my Panasonic Lumix still camera as a MOV file. I had already put away the big video camera for the main interview.

Doc South's Radio Show at Chatterbox

I convinced Karen to give me a little break today and we had lunch at the Chatterbox. As often as we go - several times a month - today was the first time we touched base with Doc South and his regular internet radio show. Connect with the show at Time Travel is Possible.
The ducks made a small donation to the phones for troops and the hamburgers were great - as usual.

Remote controlled SR-71 Blackbird

Remote controlled SR-71 Blackbird
For those who love airplanes, here is a flying model of the SR-71. It is owned by a German who must have more than $100,000 invested in this model. It is really amazing. There seems to be no limit to what you can do if you have enough money...and he's a pretty good RC stick. If you like airplanes and model airplanes, this is quite a show.
BIG BOYS TOYS
Remote controlled SR-71 Blackbird
It was used during the cold war as an aircraft against the Russians to photo their nuclear and missile installations prior to the use of satellites. I understand that it could reach speeds faster than any missile and precluded the stealth technology. I think it could go a mach 5 or 6. db

Brazilian ETFs: Best of the BRIC Countries -- Seeking Alpha
Investor newsletters from seeking alpha --- this particular article shows population pyramids for the BRIC countries and points out some of the value of the ETF stock mix called EWZ. The next time EWZ pulls back a fair amount - would probably be a good time to look at adding some to a portfolio. A Vanguard mutual fund that is a similar mix is VERSX.

"No He Can't" by Dr. Anne Wortham

The Plain Truth: "No He Can't" by Dr. Anne Wortham
This article was written in Nov. 2008. The author is black and a student of Ayn Rand. That is to say she is a libertarian in her political leanings. This is rare among all Americans but especially rare among black Americans. Her writing has a biting sense of truth.

Dogfights Leyte Gulf 2 of 5

This is an excellent summary from the book "the last stand of the tin can sailors" by hornfischer - who is interviewed in the film. The Battle of Leyte Gulf was one battle our local Veteran, Frank Mooney, was in. There were three parts of this battle- of which this talks mainly of the middle part. Mooney's ship, USS Lake DE-301 was up North with Halsey (I think).

Tanker War

at that point, was puckered up ..... and I was just reading it."All Hand Brace for Impact!"
...
new suggested phraseology under direction of the new commander in chief..
"sip some wine and chill, bro".
TANKER WAR
Nice book, Dallas! I recommend it to my friends on facebook and my email list. I cheated a little- reading the part with you and USS Gary first. I like the part where you charged at flank speed toward the silkworm to put yourself between the missile and the sea bases. Trying to stealth the directing bogey helo was cool too. You should have at least gotten the Navy Award for Audacity of Hope with palm leaves!
...........................................
For my CC friends: Dallas was Comm Officer in USS Bainbridge off Haiphong when I was comm officer in USS O'Callahan at the same time as we steamed in company for a week or so for the "Christmas Bombing" of 1972 - Hanoi. Later he became C.O. of USS Gary (featured in this book - duel with a silkworm). In 1993 he was CO of USS Cowpens and having read my book with some references to the Tonkin Gulf and Vietnam - ( a copy I had left aboard during a Cattlemen's Association tour of the ship in San Diego a couple years before) he invited me to ride his cruiser back from Hawaii to San Diego. Been a friend ever since. There is also a relationship between how USS Gary and USS O'Callahan got their names ( see www.ussocallahan.org ... see USS Franklin story of "the photo" on video pages).

If you or someone you know enjoys recent Naval History - this new book - TANKER WAR - is a good choice for yourself or as a gift.

Other GREAT NAVY READS I suggest:
A Blue Sea of Blood -- (the USS Edsall - relatiing to the Asiatic Fleet and WWII)
and Six Frigates (the epic founding of the US Navy).
